The Big Heart Hike began as a result of a challenge set by my husband Brian on my 40th birthday. He created a book of 40 challenges to do with the number 40 to be completed during that year. Two of the tougher ones were to walk 40km on one day and to find 40 people to donate $40 dollars to charity. It was decided to combine the two challenges.
The year before, my beautiful father Henry Perram passed away. He had had long standing issues with his heart. In 2013, he suffered a cardiac arrest while fishing at sea. Through the outstanding work of the Forster Tuncurry Marine Rescue, he was saved and we were blessed with having him with us for almost 3 more years.
So, when looking for a charity to support, the Forster Tuncurry Marine Rescue was an obvious choice. They are entirely reliant on community support and donations. They work tirelessly to keep our community safe.
The name Big Heart was chosen as a tribute to Henry. Physically, his heart was massively enlarged, causing many of his problems. However, it also described him perfectly. He was the most generous, kind hearted person who always helped people.
The Big Heart Hike was born. In 2017, the inaugural walk occurred. The (almost) 40km walk was undertaken by about 60 people, ranging in age from 10 to 70. Some people walked a little, some all of it.
In the afterglow of that day, it was decided that it would become an annual event, raising money and keeping the “big hearted” spirit of Henry alive.
This year, we are starting a new chapter. As active members of the Forster Surf Life Saving Club, we are proud to use the walk this year to help raise some money for the new clubhouse. Please join us in 2024 for the biggest walk yet.
